Sergeant First Class Master Gunner Carl J. Martin, of Chesnee, South Carolina passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the age of 71, in his home, after a short battle with cancer.
Mr. Martin was born in Luzerne County, on October 30, 1953, the son of the late John J. Martin and Marita Zim. Carl was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He served honorably in the Army for 21 years with a ranking of Sergeant First Class, and Master Gunner with several medals including Commendation Medal (5th Award), Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), Officers Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3, Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award) and Expert Marksmanship Qualification. Following his military service with the Army, Mr. Martin worked for The Department of Corrections as a correctional officer for 10 years, where he also retired. He was a member of American Legion, Post 644 Swoyersville.
Surviving are his daughters Jennifer Menichini (Joseph) Shavertown, and Tracy Clocker; brother Jay Martin (Kim) North Carolina, sisters, Karen Carey, Suzanne Martin; many nieces and nephews, including nephew, Michael Shiptoski (Jenny) Old Forge with whom he had a very special relationship. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.
He is to be buried with full Army honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Carl may be made to a local veterans association.
